Level 1 Pre-program Assignments

Read the book, Drum Circle Facilitation: Building Community Through Rhythm by Arthur Hull. This book will give you important background, terminology and Drum Circle Facilitation concepts.

View the the companion DVD, filmed live at the Hawaii Playshop. This DVD will demonstrate the techniques you will be learning while providing a window into the spirit of the Hawaii Playshop. Information and inspiration is gained from interviews with a variety of practicing Drum Circle Facilitators. Books and the DVD are available through Village Music Circles.

Specific reading and practice assignments are given below. These assignments will help you to prepare for your training.

Reading Assignments

  1. DCF: Chapter 6
    • Call Of The Drum
    • Drum Call will be the first thing we do as a group.
  2. DCF: Chapter 4
    • Facilitation Triplicity, Tools, Techniques and Intentions
    • Identify and develop the physical body language needed to facilitate.
    • Practice the body movements indicated in the chapter with or with out a live circle.

Writing Assignments

  1. Write a Bio of your facilitation work or write about your goals and intentions.
  2. Provide a history of your rhythm facilitation activities.
    Or
    Describe how you intend to integrate your new skills into what you are already doing.
  3. Create your own mission statement for this training: DCF: pg78
    Tell us about Yourself
    Who are you?
    Why are you at this training? 
    What is your intended use of the knowledge you gain from this experience?
  4. Write “My best facilitation experience / My worst facilitation experience”.
    Using the  critique technique write a page or less each.

Mentor Assignments

  1. Complete the above assignments.
  2. Bring with you to camp a 10 min. video of an event you have facilitated.
